Moved into an old house with really nice beams but they are worn, have filler in some places, different shades in color, and the tone is waaaay too much on the red side (not really visible in the pictures) ... We want to somehow stain them to achieve a lighter and cooler brown tone.

The beams are rough and not even on the surface. How to sand them? We don't want to ruin too much of the appearance (except for the tone) ...

  • Old house interior with exposed wooden beams, tiled floor, and a rustic kitchen area featuring a fireplace and modern appliances.
  • Wooden beams in a kitchen are visible. The beams appear old with a reddish tone. A small table is attached, with kitchen items on it.
  • Exposed wooden beams on a painted wall with varying colors, showing wear and patching. Light fixtures illuminate the beams, with a sofa and ladder in view.
  • A dark wooden beam against a light wall, with visible texture and imperfections. Two electrical outlets are located near the bottom.
I used a rotating steel brush for the drill. No model I can find online (it was in the house we bought).
Fairly similar to this, but with steel wires and significantly sparser between the wires.

Going to fix three long ones in another room and there will be blasting. Doesn't seem relevant for you...
