How to fix knot holes in panel ceiling?

I have an old panel ceiling that we are planning to paint white. The panel is made of spruce and there are lots of large holes where the knots were. How is it best to repair these? Filler or latex? I'm afraid they will crack again after a while.

Ok so they don't crack with carpentry filler then? Are they stronger than sand filler? Otherwise, I was thinking plastic padding, but it becomes difficult to sand.

You can also try wood floor spackel, available in small tubes.

Sandspackel is only for drywall on walls. However, it will crack if you use it...
