The recommendation should be 1 turn of pipe tape per diameter of pipe thread. I am going to install a 40R foot valve, which should then be 45 turns of tape. That's a crazy amount. After 30 turns, it already looks like too much.
I will lower the foot valve into a lake, so I only have one chance.

As you mentioned, it's not reasonable to use so much thread tape. One of the guys in the store checked how many turns are reasonable, and he took about 25 turns, but it must be stretched a lot when you apply it. Use enough tape so that the connection becomes tight but does not move the thread tape.
