Hello! I need to set up a child gate on these stairs and realize that I probably need to build something on the "open" side to be able to attach it. Something running parallel to the right beam so that the gate can be as low as possible, simply.
How would you achieve a solution that is stable enough and looks reasonably aesthetically pleasing? How should it be attached, what type of wood, etc.? Grateful for as detailed answers as possible.
😊

  • A small staircase with two white steps and a striped potted plant on the landing, adjacent to a wooden floor and a partial white railing.
  • A staircase with a white vertical beam and a planter, showing an open section needing modification for a child gate installation.
  • White staircase corner with open railing, showing potential area for attaching a child gate extension on the right side for enhanced stability.
Spontaneously, you'll probably need to build a short railing on the left side as well.

I had a similar issue, but I built the whole gate myself:
A white DIY stair gate with metal bars is installed at the top of a wooden staircase.

The absolute easiest option must be to buy something like BabyDan Flex M and place it right at the bottom of the entire staircase...
If it's not a requirement that the gate should be on the first step.

That's what we did at home with a staircase like that and also put a BabyDan Flex XL around the tiled stove. It was very easy to install, sits firmly, and became _sufficiently_ aesthetic to have there while the children are small.

Thanks for the tips! I looked at a BabyDan Flex M earlier but got the impression that it was too wide. I do know that I looked to see if there was an S but I didn't find any. The staircase is quite narrow, so many gates were ruled out for that reason. How flexible is BabyDan? Is it possible to angle the sides 90 degrees?

Would it be possible to place the gate over the first step? The lower step is not higher or more dangerous than a chair or stool.

This is how our BabyDan Flex M is positioned. The sides can be angled 90 degrees if desired. The gate is 72cm and the sides are 33cm.

How wide is your staircase?

Edit: They can even be angled more than 90 degrees.

The model we have now doesn't fit there either without modification. But I've been considering whether the simplest solution might just be to place a discreet rule across the railing and attach the gate to it. As you say, one step isn't the end of the world. 😊

I can't remember the width right now but I want to say less than 70cm at least. Thank you so much for the demonstration, it seems like it could be an alternative if we are "forced" to buy something else.
