Hello,

I need to install a storm shield on a wall vent, but the problem is that the vent is located just above the air/water pump. You need to access the vent properly because it is not screwed in place but glued, meaning it has to be cut off. The new one thus also needs to be glued in place with some type of sealant (uneven Mexi brick).

Exterior wall with a small wall vent above a large air-to-water heat pump unit on a grass lawn, next to a gray brick building.

I've considered a stepladder, but it probably needs to be enormous to fit. It also doesn't seem possible to stand on the pump.

Suggestions?

Ordinary long ladder, it will tilt quite a bit and may slide on the ground, but if there is only grass there, you can jump on the last step so it sinks into the ground. To secure it further, you can drive down 2 pieces of 45X45 that rest against the outside of the last step.

Just such a one was also recommended by the rental company. Around 300 SEK for a day, but you can rent a trailer with it.

What do you think, can you dare to stand a little on the edge of the outdoor part otherwise?

Do not stand on the outdoor unit! If a ladder does not reach inside because the outdoor unit is in the way, you can have a ladder on each side of the outdoor unit and have something in between that you can stand on.

You have a regular ladder at home, right?
If not, buy one.
Then do as

Then do as jonaserik earlier suggested here above, done.

Twice for clarity's sake👍

If you are a homeowner, a 2x3 m ladder is a must! How else will you be able to clean the gutters in the fall for leaves?
Or borrow your neighbor's ladder while offering him some coffee.

Sure, I have a ladder in 2 parts, so one on each side of the outdoor unit leaning against it? And then buy a plank and lay it between them? Will that be stable or might it require some carpentry?

Have you checked hygglo.se? If you're lucky, there's someone in the neighborhood you can rent from.

  • A heat pump unit against a brick wall with a red ladder drawn over it.

I didn't assume that would work since the ladder needs to stand quite far out from the wall, but it's definitely worth a practical try.

Draw a tension strap or string from the bottom of the ladder around the heat pump's foundation so it can't slide away.

Tried setting up our 6-meter ladder and climbing up to the vent, felt fairly stable. Need to get a hook for the ladder so I can keep my stuff in a bucket up by the vent. If you lean against the ladder, you can reach the vent pretty well and cut it away from the sealant that's there today. Then I think the new cap should be screwed on (since it weighs little) and finally, some Tec7 will be needed because of the uneven Mex brick.

The ladder has spikes against the lawn which prevents it from slipping away.

What do you think, could this be safe enough?
