Hole cutting in IPE 200 beam for sewer pipe 110mm (Image)

Hello!

As the title suggests, I'm considering the possibilities of creating openings for sewer pipes through an I-beam, see attached image. The hole will of course be made directly above a support (marked in green in the image). This is the only way to get past the beam as it is recessed into the floor structure. Note that no beam is placed directly above the post (green) despite the drawing showing it.

Instinctively, it feels like it should be safe as long as it is done over a support point.

Anyone?

Is the beam solid or spliced at the support?

If it is solid, the best place might not be at the support; instead, the maximum moment could be right there depending on how many supports the beam has.

Above a support can be one of the worst places to make a hole, as the pressure is greatest and the moment too.

In that case, you should reinforce the beam with for example vertical flat irons on the sides of the hole.

The best place for a hole should be a bit to the side of the support where the moment is 0?

But I'm just a happy amateur

I suspect you are onto something! =) Upon further reflection, it should be just as you say, the pressure on the beam is naturally greatest at the support points.

Placing the hole on the side is no problem, quite the opposite, I have up to about 40-50cm of lateral space for drilling, so I could make the hole a little off to the side of the setup.

The beam is continuous without joints, about 12m long, and is supported at 4 points symmetrically distributed with pillars at both gables in addition to those visible in the picture (so about every 4 meters).

Are there guidelines for this, or is it (as usual) an engineer who has to calculate for each individual case?
