Planning to remove some old pipes in the basement and want to be on the safe side. Grateful if you can look at the picture and say what you think. How can you tell if it might be asbestos?
Thanks!

  • Old basement pipes with damaged insulation, possibly asbestos. Users are asked to identify the material for safe removal.
Yes, in the past, asbestos was used as pipe insulation in the bends. Not recommended perhaps, but I myself taped with duct tape and removed the pipe.

But can you see if this contains asbestos?

They are similar to the ones we had in the housing association I lived in before. During the pipe replacement, we had to pay extra for the asbestos removal from the pipe bends. I don't know if there was asbestos in them, but I would guess so since they (Skanska) came out and looked several times before. So I THINK there is a risk of asbestos in your insulation, but only in the bends!

However (and this has been discussed in another thread on the forum with different opinions), if it's a few bends and you're doing it in your own basement, I would have soaked the insulation thoroughly, put on a face mask, and then carefully torn it down. I would have placed the waste in a separate bag and then taken it to the waste station for proper disposal!

If it's larger amounts, I probably wouldn't attempt it myself!
