Hello,
We are going to replace a load-bearing interior wall.
We have used the sizing program on byggbeskrivningar.se.
We have already purchased 90x270 laminated timber as well as 90x90 pillars. The opening would then be 2220!
Now we changed our minds at the last second, and we want the opening all the way to the exterior wall, 2400mm.
The program then suggests a width of 115 and other heights.
But the program does not consider one thing, the beam we have will rest "further" as an interior wall and is supported by multiple pillars, after the opening.
In other words, the first 1200mm of the beam rests on several pillars, then there will be an opening of 2400, and finally another pillar attached to the exterior wall.
I believe that the pillars where there is no opening and where the laminated timber continues allow for a bit more balancing and thus an opening.
Does 90x270 work then?
Furthermore, Moelven's program shows that 90x270 seems to work with 2400 as the opening.
Generally speaking, you're right that a beam is better utilized and can carry more if one or preferably both ends of the beam can be classified as "fixed encastre." Now, it's difficult to say whether your extra 1200mm at one end allows it to be considered as fixed encastre, but it certainly won't be worse.
Under the current circumstances, I wouldn't worry about increasing the opening by 180mm in width.
The old wall is now gone, the structure that was there was simply pillars inside the wall made of 45x45 timber c/c 30 spacing.
Maybe this helps you experts calculate a bit easier?
If you know how much it was classified to support back then, you can also know what to replace it with.
If you want expert help, you should contact an engineer. No one with that expertise provides free sizing on the web.
If you don't want to pay for an engineer, träguiden/svenskt trä has good information. Don't try to take any shortcuts by claiming you have advantageous boundary conditions.
Alternatively, take a chance on slimmer dimensions at your own risk. Document for the next owner.
