If you get good pressure when gluing, you get a good joint that then doesn't need either screws or nails. Nails or screws or combinations of these work fine.
Screws are therefore the easiest to apply pressure with, pre-drill the outer rule, screw in screws close enough so that glue squeezes out all the way.
