Hi, we are renovating our house and have ripped out the old floor and poured a new slab. When we removed the old one, we found a small, small root cellar, which we preserved and we want to install a small hatch with glass.

The glass will be about 400*1000mm in size, so it's not a gigantic size. Will 2*6mm tempered laminated glass be sufficient here?

That thickness can be found at a reasonable price online.

I previously placed an old stage floor as a lid on a well and that glass was 2*8mm, 1000*1000mm, since it was designed to function as a stage floor, so shouldn't a 2*6mm glass work here, or what do you think?

Exciting solution! An alternative might be to make the hatch from a welded steel frame with a supporting cross under the glass so you don't have to worry (I don't know what the recommendations are for using glass as flooring but maybe someone with knowledge can fill in).

It's a solution that is definitely worth looking into.

However, I realized that I have an acquaintance who is a glazier, whom I sent the question to, and he dismissed both glass options. If it's going to meet the regulations, the glass should be 21mm thick. 2*10mm tempered and laminated glass!

Ah, there we have an answer from the expert! Did you get a price estimate?

Around 2000:- excluding VAT, at the wholesale level, so my price will probably be double that...

I seem to remember that there was a similar project in the forum earlier. Maybe worth searching for.

You should cultivate your acquaintance with the glasis so that you become even better buddies - then you might also get his price :)

He has stopped working as a glazier, but if the price I get is completely crazy, he might still be able to help, I will get back to you when I have the price.

Soon I can show pictures, the hatch is manufactured, with gas dampers, electromagnetic lock, and gas springs, but the glass will take a little while longer.

The total price, however, was a bit steep. 15000:- plus VAT. In hindsight, I wonder if we should have filled it with gravel and sealed it with concrete.

The hatch is still not finished, the gas springs were incorrect, but now it's close!

  • Glass cover being constructed, awaiting correct gas springs, placed on a workbench with scattered tools and cables nearby.

You did exactly the right thing. Every house needs to have a little special touch that the owners can enjoy every day. It doesn't amount to many crowns per day.
