We have just bought a house and today when we were removing a couple of wardrobes, we found this, 20x30 cm. It's clear that a bunch of mice have been active here, but could they really have gnawed such a large hole?! How do we best solve this? Tear down the whole wall and rebuild?

  • Hole in wall with visible insulation and wood, surrounded by dirt on wooden floor, likely mouse-related damage in newly purchased house.
No, mice always make U-shaped holes.

And a little more seriously... that they can gnaw a hole in a chipboard, I don't doubt for a second, they do that easily. But it won't be a rectangular hole when they do it...

Those mice seem to have been equipped with a drill and a jigsaw.

And to be a bit more serious... I have no doubt that they can gnaw a hole in a particle board, they do that easily. But it won't be a rectangular hole when they do it...
But the question remains. Do we tear it down or should we just patch it up?

I had opened the wall and cleaned out, rat's nest debris is not pleasant.

....yes, one might want to understand the extent of the damage.

Regardless of the mice, one does ask a few questions. Why was the hole made and what does the framing/insulation look like behind the board?

Put cheese in the hole see if it disappears
