Hello.

I need to get hold of some bolts with a square head, maximum wrench size 21mm.
A regular carriage bolt with a rounded top DOES NOT work as the square part is too small.

Size of the bolt itself 12 or 14 in diameter and about 100mm in length.
Imperial sizes are also fine as long as they are easily available.
In that case, the diameter should be 1/2 or 9/16 and about 4" in length.

Is there any store in Sweden that carries these and doesn't cost too much?

Grateful for help.

Square skulls disappeared about 100 years ago.
You can buy hexagonal ones and grind them yourself.

I admit that I don't know, but it sounds extremely specific and odd. The classic square-headed screw model often has very small heads, just slightly larger than the thread.

Square nut, threaded rod, and a dab of strong glue or welding might solve it for you?

Cut massive square bar 20x20 mm, drill and tap M12 + M12 Threaded Rod.

Isn't it a T-slot bolt you need?

Square heads exist, and on much more modern things than 100-year-olds. But I can't find any in that size on this continent...

I’m going to mount accessories on a tractor from '61, and there are ready-made recesses for the bolt. A hex head just slides around in the hole, and I haven't gotten to welding yet.

M12 has a 19mm head, but the ones I found cost 400 SEK each (I need 8) and delivery is not until the end of July...

I have a piece of 20 mm square bar that I can cut and thread.
Give me the height of the head and it will be sorted.

It has been incredibly kind of you. However, I need 8...
The height of the head is of less importance as it is free at the back.
M12 or M14 is also not important since standard hex bolts are easy to obtain in both dimensions.

Is it possible to turn the problem around square nuts are easy to obtain...

Hornbach for example stocks up to m12;

Considered that option and thinking about possibly trying it for a while if I can't get hold of the "right" parts. Since it's weights for the tires that need to be attached, and they weigh several kilograms, I want the nut on the outside as I perceive it as easier to see if it starts vibrating loose. It won't be much fun if suddenly a weight comes off when you're cruising on the highway, so to speak. Plus, the "correct" way from the start was bolt on the inside, nut on the outside.

8 pieces…………. I usually keep 56 pieces of various manufactured things so 8 is much simpler.

Well, you can lock the nut with a center punch, but on the other hand a whole screw becomes more "original-like"...

If you want the same strength as an 8.8 screw, you should go up to square bar of s355, but I don't think it really matters... Not much is likely to happen if you lose a weight...

My tip is really unpleasant, i.e., try Facebook. Look up local tractor groups. If they don't have tips, there is always someone who can weld. It has been resolved this time, but next time it's good to have some contacts.

Approximately where in the country are you?

Flange bolt has a large round head that can be cut square.
