I wrote Byggmax and Beijer but could just as easily have written Bauhaus and XL.
Is cheap always bad, or is there sometimes no difference in quality?
I'm curious about what others say and will start with my own opinion:)

My perception is that the timber at Byggmax holds the same quality as most others.
The same goes for chipboard, gypsum, concrete, treated wood, etc.

However, I think their paint is of lower quality. Some screws are really terrible, I only use essve now and think the difference is noticeable:) and I laid their click floor many years ago, and it was difficult to lay. The quality was okay on the parquet, but it wasn't a real click floor. That is, you assemble the floor without any problem, and it just clicks:)

It was a few years ago that I laid the floor, so it might have improved. But recently, we laid a click floor at work from Bauhaus that had the same problem. That is, it took a long time to lay. So, it might be a problem that cheaper click floors have lower quality.

As I said, I don't think I have the right answer but thought it was a fun thread to start, and I'm curious about what others have to say:)

I shop for 20-30 kkr/month at Byggmax, mostly paint and flooring, but I generally think it's good stuff. At my Byggmax, the timber is from Södra and it is at Beijers too. Byggmax's own branded silicone/glue, etc., is from Bostik, and there's nothing to complain about there. The floor layers have no complaints about the floors.

Always buy all wood at XL as it is always straight and nice, Bauhaus definitely has the worst wood, as they leave the bands on the wood packages so they become like bananas. Paint and filler with the building store's own brand tend to be totally useless. I always buy screws from Spax or Jetting. Building boards have the same quality even at discount stores.

But the quality of the timber itself is no different, right, when it comes to Byggmax and XL? Or Bauhaus then?
Because I think the timber is the same, but at Byggmax, it's often more picked over. That is, you're going to buy timber and all that's left are bananas :)

As for metal sheets and gutters, I think they are of lower quality at Byggmax and their metal sheets are also thinner.
But significantly cheaper than well-known brands. So it's a trade-off issue.

The strength is surely no different between XL and Byggmax, but it's no fun building a wall with banana lumber. XL is a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and they have knowledgeable staff. Cheap and good is an incorrect expression.

I agree. And with a little discount, it might be that the lumber almost costs the same at xl and byggmax.

I used the local hardware store, it was cheaper than Byggmax and delivered for 400 SEK. The end result is a 60 sqm large deck.

Same here, I've had the lumber delivered from both Beijer and karlhedin for cheaper than it would have cost to pick it up myself from byggmax. You should always negotiate when there are a few more things you need.

I have completely different experiences. Have bought some small battens 2"x2" that looked like bananas at byggmax. Didn't look so crooked when I loaded them, but once I got home, I discovered that they were really crooked. It might vary from store to store and batch to batch.

Have tried shopping at Byggmax but mostly get angry... It has been studs and paneling as well as rough sawn planks. Bent and crooked in cases where there was anything left in the pile, varying lengths with very different lengths, etc. Went with a friend who was going to build a deck. Bought decking screws that couldn't be used, poor precision in the slot so the bit just chattered and spun around (the screw couldn't handle anything, even snapped a screw when I got a grip with the bit and it moved sluggishly in the timber). The footings were OK, the studs and decking were rubbish.

An ex-father-in-law bought cheaper paint - it was incredibly hard to paint with and required 4-5 coats to cover but the result was not nice.

It's slightly better at Bauhaus and K-Rauta but not much in terms of timber. Moldings and trim are often better at Bauhaus as they don't have everything in the timber hall in moisture and cold.
I don't think there's much difference in sheet materials to make it worth going extra for them, so I buy them where it's closest and I'm heading anyway.
Now, I'm just a hobbyist craftsman and homeowner, so I don't buy in large quantities, but if I did, I would definitely negotiate with a lumberyard that delivers good quality and pay the extra bucks. The work goes faster and easier with good materials. (and I avoid a heart attack...)

Try jetting turbo trallskruv, superb!

It is said that Byggmax bruk, concrete, and similar products are manufactured by Finja, and it's not crap. :)

I buy timber at the local XL-Bygg, also small items, but quite a lot from Byggmax as well.

For example, I requested an invoice for our deck including screws etc., as well as delivery of the timber, and it would cost around 1000:- less than everything from Byggmax (plus, I would have had to pick it up myself). I don't regret that XL-Bygg then sold 145x34 decking instead of 120x28 (it cost around 1000:- more for that on our 60m2 deck) :)

Can also recommend bruk, concrete, and similar products from Combimix available at Bauhaus. Very satisfied with these!

Small items and individual boards I buy at Byggmax. Larger orders of timber, mortar, insulation, etc., I get through the local farm supply store that has better quality, prices, and delivers everything for 500kr.

Why hassle with a trailer, driving back and forth 20 times when you can make a phone call and have everything delivered the next day right at your door?
