The chimney is sealed, pressure-tested, and approved. It's mostly cosmetic, and I want to prevent it from getting worse. The chimney has a hat, but no hood.
I definitely won't redo the masonry. My motto is never fix something that's not broken. I don't think covering it with metal will solve anything.
I was just thinking of cleaning off loose parts and repairing it, and then possibly applying some stone/brick impregnation.
