What are the requirements when installing a pellet boiler in a garage?
Came to the conclusion that there are new rules after the turn of the year, some with reduced protection due to EU adaptation...

Checked BBR but can't find anything useful.

Heard something about triple gypsum?

But then what?
Can you store pellets in the same room as the burner, or should it be separate?

I'm not saying boiler room, because that only applies to boilers over 60kW :)

The transitional rules between the old and new BBR apply this year. So constructions during 2012 can choose to use either regulation, but not mix the two.

However, I can't find the regulations regarding garages tonight, but if I remember correctly, you are not allowed to have a fireplace in a garage; it must be placed in its own fire compartment (which can be part of the garage body).

Similarly, a pellet storage should be a separated part, but I'm unsure if this only applies to large boilers > 60 kW.

Yes, that's how it is, the boiler is supposed to be in its own room without connection to the garage unless there is an airlock in between.

In practice, can one build a room in the garage that is fire-rated? Is fire-resistant drywall sufficient? What do the regulations say about doors? Does one need an external door for the room, or can the door be inside the garage?

Yes, fire-rated room. However, no door to the garage, an airlock is required.

Ok.
-PC-, I'm a bit curious about how you've arranged the layout of the garage with the boiler and everything.
Are you also going to build a bulk storage?
Do you have a sketch of the layout?

I don't have a sketch, but I'm planning to build 7.2m wide and about 12m long. I haven't gotten very far in the planning stage, I've downloaded Google SketchUp, but I don't understand it yet :p

I haven't planned for a bulk storage, it will be simple enough to pour pellets into the bin without having to run down a narrow/steep basement staircase. Not to forget, crouch so you don't hit your head on the ceiling on the last steps

The plan now is to partition off 3.6m across, so I get a space of 7.2x3.6m. Which I, in turn, will divide into two rooms. A boiler room and one outside as storage/pellet storage. Because you're not allowed to store pellets in the same room as the boiler, right?

Because I guess you're not allowed to store pellets in the same room as the boiler?

Sounds like you'll have plenty of space :-)

I've also been sitting tonight with Google Sketchup... great to put up walls and see the measurements. It's easy once you get the hang of it ;-)
I'm keen on a bulk storage for a bit of convenience.
My garage will probably be about 7.20X8.40 internally so I'll try to figure out a smooth layout.

Have you decided which boiler you're going to have?

No, not a clue what kind of boiler it will be...

Should tackle SketchUp, there are probably some videos about it on YouTube :)
