Hello!

I'm planning to build a roughly 250-meter-long wooden fence around the property to keep fairly large dogs inside. The design I have in mind consists of only 4 or 5 horizontal boards and no vertical ones.

Since the fence is quite long, the cost and therefore dimensions are of great importance. I think I should use pressure-treated wood for the entire fence, it doesn't seem to be much more expensive than untreated lumber and it also means I won't have to paint it.

Now to the dimensions. The fence should be 120cm high, as that is the maximum allowed by the municipality. As far as I can see, I actually have two options for the horizontal boards: 28x120mm or 45x145mm.
28x120 is sold for 12.75/meter and 45x145 is sold for 27.3 SEK/meter at Byggmax

Since I need 1000(!) meters, the two alternatives differ significantly in price. The question is whether you think it will work to use 28x120 or if it is simply too flimsy.

For the posts, I was thinking of using 90x90mm or maybe log timber 120x140, see http://www.byggmax.com/se-sv/Prod/Tra/Virke-Tryckt/Default.aspx.

Can you use such log timber as posts, or will it just look silly?

Then another question, can you paint pressure-treated wood? I might consider doing this in a year when the finances are a bit better. Pressure-treated wood is, after all, quite unattractive, so I don't think the neighbors will be too pleased

Thanks for the help!!

It is perfectly fine to paint it once it has dried. It is often dripping wet when you bring it home.
