We are going to paint our fiber cement house and install trim around the windows. Currently, there are flashing pieces above and below the windows, presumably to divert water.
The upper flashing is probably attached to the old wooden panel behind the fiber cement, and the fiber cement is cut and then mounted on. My question now is whether it is a risky construction to place trim above the flashing, i.e., if water will run down behind the trim and out onto the flashing.
I understand that the trim might take damage and probably won't last as long as if the flashing was above it. But can the construction behind be damaged?
I plan to paint the trim on both sides to reduce the risk of rotting. How it looks aesthetically with the flashing beneath is another matter. But I don't want to mess with the fiber cement and remove the flashing just to install another above the trim.
Grateful for any opinions.
