For our bedroom project, I bought this board from Bauhaus.
Due to the information below, I thought it was a board made of MDF and Oak, but that's not correct; the veneer is placed on a rubber mat.
I was planning to cover the bed as in the image below:
Do you think it's still possible to achieve this? How do you join external corners?
If it had been MDF, I would have mitered (cut at a 45-degree angle) with the table saw. But it feels a bit risky with the acoustic material. If it's not perfectly even, you'll get gaps in the veneer. What do you think?
I am instead leaning towards the following option, where you cut away the acoustic material all the way down to the veneer 10mm in width to create a joint. I think it might work?
I think it's difficult to find something that matches in finish; I've been experimenting at home with wood stain and various oils to match other wood details with each other, and it's not easy to get similar colors, as even minor variations stand out quite a lot.
Maybe I should try a 45-degree cut, but then the "frame" around the bed needs to be completely straight, and it won't be precise to the millimeter if I build it with something like 45x45. Difficult... Also, I'm not sure how noticeable any gaps will be in the corners, but I can of course improve them with wood-colored putty if it's just a matter of a few mm where it doesn't fit perfectly.
I think a joint where the acoustic board is cut away from the veneer is most forgiving. However, the construction I have in mind would have two visible outer corners. That means a total of about (2m+2m+2m)*2=12 linear meters of panel where I have to cut away an exact strip of 10mm acoustic panel. It could take many hours if it's difficult to detach it from the veneer. I'm also unsure about the risk of accidentally cutting through the veneer.
Just so I don't mislead anyone — it was MDF under the veneer after all.
Carried in a bunch of regular acoustic panels with ribs and these panels at the same time and they felt just as floppy and the MDF is painted black — but it's MDF and it shouldn't be a problem to cut these with a sharp 45-degree edge. 😅
