Hello,

I am in the middle of a basement renovation project being done by a local company. Everything is supposed to be done the "right" way, i.e., drainage and insulation on the outside, breaking up the floor and insulating, etc.

Now they've done something a bit odd, but I might be wrong. There is an interior brick wall that runs through the entire basement - it is load-bearing and has direct ground contact. Today, the company has put up moisture-resistant drywall on this wall in what will be a bathroom - note, far from the shower/bathtub but close to the sink. I had thought the entire wall would just be plastered and painted, but is their solution completely wrong? It seems like they've put a layer of concrete or plaster behind it. Attaching some pictures.
Thanks for your help before I talk to them tomorrow!

  • Fiber-reinforced gypsum board installed on a brick wall with a metal conduit hanging and handwritten notes. The wall is part of a basement renovation project.
  • Brick wall under renovation with partially applied plaster in a basement. Visible construction materials and equipment in the background.
  • Close-up of a basement renovation showing a drywall panel over a brick wall with visible concrete layer and pipes in the background.
  • Brick basement wall with new drywall installed, showing construction tools and materials. Wall is in progress of renovation with visible patchwork.
  • Basement renovation showing newly installed plasterboard on a brick wall. Metal studs, electrical conduits, and tool marks visible.
  • Close-up of a drywall edge with visible plaster and marked text, part of a basement renovation project.
What will the sealing system be? And which surface layer?

The board is set with plaster. Can't see any good reason to have plaster except if you can't plaster.

Thanks for the response - appreciated.

There will be no waterproofing there, just painted with wet room paint which is probably right in a basement, I believe - waterproofing only on the floor and in the shower.

I talked to the company today and they say there's nothing wrong with the method, but they do apply waterproofing near the sink to ensure safety. I'm still not entirely satisfied because it should have just been plastered. The only reason for the plasterboard is that there's a "ledge" at the bottom of the wall, so it would take quite a lot of plaster to even it out.

I believe there's little to no risk of mold - am I right about that? I'm mostly upset because I know there would be no risk of moisture damage/mold with a plastered wall, and I had mentioned that I wanted it plastered, but I don't feel like complaining if there's no real risk.
