I have a real dilemma. I'm going to install new windows in the house. The house was built in '81 and doesn't have drip caps above them, but they are almost flush with the interior wall, so the exterior reveal from the window to the outside panel is 10 cm. The old windows have no rot damage, they are simply worn from age, so my question is: should I now tear off the panel and try to install drip caps over the windows, or is it unnecessary when the window is set so far in? You don't want to mess up when you finally replace the windows.
How is any water that gets behind the paneling drained so that it doesn't end up on top of the window frame? If there's no risk there, it should be fine to skip the window flashing.
The biggest problem (or most annoying) is that after the air gap comes an insulation layer of about 5 cm, THEN comes some kind of wind barrier and finally 12 cm of insulation and framework. Which means that I have nothing at all to attach a flashing to.
