Hi!

Just moved into a house built in '67. The fiber comes into the basement and they've already drilled up to the first floor where I've placed a router.

The problem is that my office is on the second floor (basically directly above the router on the first floor). Therefore, I want to drill up to the second floor, but I obviously want to avoid drilling into electrical and water lines, and I also have underfloor heating on the second floor.

The latter I can solve as I understand it with a thermal camera to see where the loops are. In the office, there is a former closet where the concrete is exposed, which is perfect.

How do I ensure that electricity and water aren't damaged? I read something about a metal detector? Should you hire someone for this type of work?

Wifi
Hehe, I'm both a gaming nerd and a programmer... WiFi is not good enough. But wifi will be there via an access point... That connects via cable!

As a wise man (and industry colleague) put it, it takes a lot of cable to build a good wireless network, and there is indeed a lot of truth to that...
But to get the cable there without mishaps is mostly about deducing what might be there... Try using a stud finder and think a bit more about what might be there and how it might be laid out. Then you drill and keep your fingers crossed. It can always go wrong, and then you have to solve it... Water can usually be deduced with reasonable certainty where it is... Radiators, bathroom, kitchen nearby? Electricity can be trickier but at the same time usually "simpler" and somewhat less extensive if it happens to get in the way.

Drill calmly.
