I am planning to extend our house and need to create an opening in the exterior wall and do a support beam. The plan is to use a steel beam, IPE beam in quality S355J2. The challenge now is the dimensioning of this beam, I have searched a lot online for calculation tools but can't find anything suitable. Perhaps someone here can help me?
The conditions are that I want to create an opening that is 3600mm wide with a height of 2100mm. The house is 1 ½ stories with concrete tiles and a finished and insulated upper floor. Below are some images of the floor plan and some 3D.
Why do you want an IPE beam? Why not an HEA beam? There must be a beam in the ceiling of the living room resting on the same pillar as the intended beam. What type of beam is it? Do you know its dimensions? You need access to sectional drawings if you are going to calculate this.
It is indeed correct that there is already a beam in the ceiling of the living room. This beam is encased with dimensions of 290 x 135, so it's probably an IPE 270 or IPE 240 or some special with corresponding dimensions. It cannot be an HEA-beam as these measurements do not match at all. I have attached a section drawing and a floor plan where the green marking shows where the existing beam is located.
I think it is a problem to align the red and green beams at basically the same level, unless an additional column is added next to it. The question is also whether the vote in the slab can withstand that load? What kind of material is the existing column made of?
I don't know what material the existing pillar is made of since it is built into the wall. My idea is to place the new pillar next to (outside) the old one and reinforce the old vot when the new one is cast. I'm considering choosing an IPE 240 or possibly an HEA 180. What do you think about that?
