I am working on the construction of a new garage. On top of the garage, I am building an upper floor that will serve as storage space, etc. To create good space on the upper floor, I am using glulam beams in the roof construction. The joists for the upper floor will rest on the outer walls plus a load-bearing beam in the middle of the house. The load-bearing beam will be 10 meters long and will be supported at one end by the outer wall and elsewhere with pillars with spacing of 2+4+4 meters. I want to use an HEA beam to save ceiling height in the garage. Otherwise, glulam might have been an option.
The garage will be 14x8 meters but at one end I want a high ceiling to be able to use a car lift.
What dimension do I need for the load-bearing beam if I use an HEA beam?
