I am doing some fine carpentry on the floor and around windows and such. Yesterday I bought close to 30lpm of planed 21x69mm and 15x69mm. Now that I've started cutting parts for a frame and details in a pine floor, I notice that the dimensions of the timber range from 65mm-69mm. Incredibly irritating since it varies by 3-4mm. Should this be accepted? Everything was purchased from a local well-stocked building supply store, and all boards were taken from the same bundle.

There was quite a bit of variation. There is surely a standard that governs it. But some variation must be expected, partly due to the moisture level.

There is an irritatingly large variation in the dimensions of planed timber. A standard can be found on, for example, the Wood Guide. Apparently, it can vary by +-1 mm. If it is to be used for furniture making, you should probably special order with a demand for precision...

Edit: image from the Wood Guide.

Yes, irritating is the word. I can accept +-1-2mm but here there's a difference of at least 4mm between several boards.

Take the boards to the company and exchange them. Bring a caliper and select to get the smallest diff possible.

Planed timber is standard lumber, right? Dressed timber is expected to be significantly better?
