I'm in the process of building a pergola using standard pressure-treated material. At the "base" of the "roof" are 2 pieces of 45x195 each 5.4m long. 3+2 pieces of 95 posts, with the other side attached to the eaves. Approximately 3m high posts. On top of this, with a span of just over 4m, I plan to lay 9 pieces of 45x170, approximately c-c 60. And then, in the same direction as the 195 beams, something smaller like 45x45 or 45x70 should be laid relatively close together to create plenty of shade. My question is whether I need to add another 195 in the middle between the outer ones? What does the expertise say here? Could I just brace between the 170 beams to stabilize them? See pictures. I leave the construction calculations to someone else and just state that it will be a damn nice build once you have them. Nice!

I can't do the calculation, but based on experience, a little deflection doesn't matter either, it will look nice.

You're not supposed to have a roof that bears snow or wind load, so you don't need an extra 195. I have 45x170 with a 3.5 m span without any problems.
