We have built a Höner and we moved in June-05 so now we are thinking of starting with the upper floor, at least insulating it. What I'm wondering about is the sawdust box in the support leg's foot, is this necessary or can it be done in another way?

Insulate all the way down and you can disregard the spånlådan.
These are the recommendations I got from the carpenter.
The spånlådan is meant to prevent floor drafts.

I have also questioned that chip box. But after an explanation, I understand. It is a way to eliminate the keel bridge that the floor would otherwise create, not floor draft.

The choice of chips as insulation is because it should act as a moisture buffer in unfavorable conditions.

I am inclined to actually build it.
