Hello to all you wise folks!
I'm thinking of cutting down the panel in the kitchen by half a meter. It currently goes almost up to the ceiling, and I want more room for wallpaper. We've just bought the house and are complete beginners at this, I have some different ideas and don't know what's best.
I thought the panel would be on top of the wall and that this would be a relatively simple project, but when I removed the trim, I saw that the wood paneling actually meets the wallpapered drywall.
1. So, when I've cut the panel down to where I want it, should I splice in drywall where the panel used to be and putty together the new drywall where it meets the old?
2. Or should I take down the current drywall too to avoid the joint, and put up whole new pieces? Maybe it's better to have the same drywall from the panel all the way up to the ceiling?
Am I foolish if I don't want to take down the upper cabinets? It feels overwhelming. Both drywall and paneling continue behind the upper cabinets, if I saw off the drywall and the paneling along the upper cabinets, will I risk the structural integrity then? Could it cause the upper cabinets to fall down?
3. Or.. should I let everything stay as it is, and just nail up a thin board over everything instead? And let it go from the ceiling down to where I want the panel to start? Wallpaper directly on that and then put trim at the transition?
I'll insert a picture of how it looks right now, with a red line where I want to cut the panel.
You can cut the panel most easily with a multi-tool, then patch in with plaster and spackle. Glue a paper strip over the joint to reinforce it.
If you can take down the cabinet it will make things easier, but it's not necessary.
