Hello!
I'm in the process of building a custom-built bench and accompanying bookshelf as shown in the picture. I'm planning to use IKEA frames for the bench and 19mm MDF for the shelf.

I don't really know how to assemble the shelf though, it should extend out to the walls on the sides and all the way up to the ceiling. Any tips on how I can put this together as easily and stably as possible and which parts are assembled to make it as simple and stable as possible?

Thankful for any tips!

Custom built-in bench and bookshelf design with IKEA frame for the bench, extending to walls and ceiling; shelves made from 19mm MDF.

Anyone who has built a shelf in MDF? :)
The options are probably one of these I guess:

  • Two MDF shelf designs with colored outlines, red and blue for the left, yellow and purple for the right, on a base cabinet background.
Glue and wooden dowel. Alternatively, glue and wooden biscuits.
Where accessible, you can use brads from the other side.

I used wood glue and a kreg pockethole jig. Then I filled the holes with wood filler.

Biscuit joiner glue and wooden biscuits. The pieces that are too long for a clamp can be tightened using a strap during gluing. The biscuit joiner is absolutely fantastic because there are no visible holes. Much more precise and faster than wooden dowels.

Have you built everything out of mdf? Even the bench? It looks fantastic.

Really well built! I suspect there's space for a TV in the middle, have you made any solution for concealed cable management behind it, and if so, any tips around that? I'm working on a build right now and don't know how to route the cables but still have access to them.

Thank you, yes I have built everything out of MDF, except for the cabinet frames which are melamine.

Thank you! The wall behind is recently plastered, so I chose to paint the bookshelf in the same color as the plaster, thus I have no back panels on the bookshelf.

Thank you very much, it's an ordinary wooden wall behind the bookshelf, so I just drilled a suitable hole behind the TV, as well as an equivalent hole in the cabinet below.
