Hello,

These cracks in the concrete basement ceiling have appeared within a couple of months this autumn. The house was built in 1936. Is it something we should worry about or address in some way?

  • Cracks in a basement concrete ceiling of a 1936 house, visible under artificial light.
  • Cracks in a concrete basement ceiling, possibly due to recent structural changes or seasonal shifts in a 1936 house.
If they have appeared so quickly so long after the house was built, something is not right. Have you made any alterations to the house's structure, excavation work on the outside?

There may have been a small initial crack formation near the pillar from before, but the crack seems to have spread a few meters over about 3 months perhaps.
We haven't done any drainage or other external work.
However, there is a bathroom above the cracks but it doesn't feel like it's due to moisture?

No, concrete does not crack due to moisture. Well, it can burst due to frost, but that's not the case here.

Conduct a thorough inspection of the entire foundation and basement ceiling etc. for additional cracks.

In my "new" house, it was the plaster that cracked, then a chunk fell off. The concrete was intact. The plaster was probably 30+ years old.

Okay, could it be that the crack is only in the plaster and not in the actual concrete ceiling?
It does look like there is a layer of plaster on the concrete ceiling, right?
It's a rental apartment, so I've only seen the crack in pictures so far.

I think it looks like raw concrete. You can see holes from air bubbles during the casting.
