A house with fire damage where the gable was attached to a now demolished/burned-down house.

The house is built of brick and has a stick or shingle roof. Crawl space/basement (I think at least).

What to do?
I'm thinking that a carpenter could build a new gable frame, and then I could cover the whole house with board and batten siding. The plan is to re-side to board and batten anyway.

The problems I foresee are that battens and shingles, etc., have burned/suffered smoke damage about a meter into the house and need to be replaced. Do you think it's possible to repair this without disturbing the rest of the roof? Is it difficult to repair shingle/stick roofs on your own?

It seems like I would want to hire out just the gable to craftspeople. What do you think it might cost? Excluding scaffolding, as I have that myself.
