I recently moved into my house and am now renovating the living room, considering changing the shape of my fireplace and wondering if it’s possible and what materials I can use.
I want the fireplace to be completely straight and not lean towards the chimney as it does today. The reason is that I would like to cover it with tiles similar to this: http://www.svenskakakel.se/images/kakel/inspiration/golv/carsica_2.jpg
I'm considering if it's possible to put metal studs from the mantelpiece up to the ceiling and cover it with cement board, and then the tile on that.
Anyone with opinions on that or ideas for other solutions or materials? Do I need, for example, to use cement board, or can I use something else?
Do I need to install some heat protection in the ceiling on the inside of the "addition"?
Also, I'm wondering if it's possible to have wooden boards on the mantelpiece?

I am thinking about this and would really appreciate if others shared their thoughts/experiences regarding this.
