We are in the process of draining a house from 1939 with a basement where there seems to have been no drainage previously. In some places, we now see that there are holes under the base plate so that you can see under the house, (see attached image of the largest hole). A mason who stopped by mentioned that he can brick these up, but we are unsure if we might need to bring in a structural engineer to ensure there are no serious damages. Is it common to find such cavities under the base plate? Can anyone provide more information?

Hole beneath a concrete foundation, showing exposed earth and debris; part of a drainage project for a 1939 house, potential structural issue.

Thanks in advance!

I have not seen any statistics regarding cavities under foundations/slabs so I don't know how common it is. It is normally better if they are not there, however, your house has been there since 1939; if there are no settlement cracks or other signs that the house is affected by the cavities, I assess that there are no problems.

Take the opportunity to brick them up as the mason suggested.
