I have a large concrete manhole cover that I plan to use for an outdoor table. I need a sturdy foundation to support the slab, so I thought of using an old concrete pipe (about 200mm diameter) that I have, which has a slightly rough patina similar to the table that I like (instead of a newly cast pillar that would be smooth). I plan to dig out a section, then insert the pipe into the ground about 2-300mm and fill it internally with concrete to the top, inserting 4 pieces of threaded rod that I will use to attach the wooden cross that the slab will rest on. My question is whether the concrete pipe will crack when the concrete inside cures?

Best answer

The pipe will not crack. Concrete even shrinks slightly as it cures.

Just make sure that the construction cannot topple over or the slab come loose if, for example, a child climbs up and jumps on the edge.
