Hello!

I'm considering casting a concrete countertop for the kitchen. There are some threads discussing this, but I'm still wondering.......

Most people say they used cement or concrete. Is that really correct? I've been told that you should use self-leveling compound to achieve the same finish but with much lower weight.

Is it just a terminology confusion? Is there a self-leveling compound specialist here who can give a yes or no??

Thanks

Cement is a binder found in concrete, self-leveling compound, mortar, etc. Just to clear that up for you.

That self-leveling compound would result in a lighter countertop, I hardly believe, maybe marginally, but much more expensive.

I would definitely use pre-mixed concrete, meaning cement and sand mixed and filled in a bag that I mix myself with water. Additionally, I would go through all the threads on countertop casting here first!

And use a mixer! I hand-mixed concrete for an outdoor table top with somewhat questionable results (it's fine as a work table outside, but not as a countertop). And vibrate/tap more than you think to remove bubbles/pores on the surface.

I made a countertop for a TV bench out of regular fine concrete from Beijer. It ended up being 1400mm x 500mm x 40mm and weighed about 65kg finished. Consider the size and especially the thickness before you start, as you need to be able to move it. In hindsight, I would have made it 25-30mm thick instead.
