Can you saw a countertop (laminate) yourself or should you pay 600 bucks?

Make sure the jigsaw is set to 0 in the pendulum position to minimize splintering. If it still feels risky, I usually score along the line. This provides a guide that prevents splintering. But this is usually needed when cutting boards with wood veneer. Tape, as mentioned, is also good.

Good tip, I wasn't aware of the scoring trick before, that one will be stored in the good-to-have place inside my head.

I sawed our countertop without any problems using a jigsaw. I also used a splinter guard on the jigsaw and then it doesn't chip at all. I used a Festool jigsaw, but other brands surely have similar splinter guards you can attach to the saw before cutting.
