I was thinking of building an underground bunker. Entrance from our basement. It will be protected from fire and have a vault-like door and is intended for storing digital materials (hard drives, memories, etc.) as well as important papers, old photos, and other things that you particularly care about.
Now to the technical part, how do I protect the bunker roof from water, since it will be a few meters underground? It obviously must be well-drained, but some form of waterproofing must still be used on top of the concrete, right? What material is used for that?

I would dig a pit and cast a small house therein with a sloping roof and then clad the "house's" walls and roof with isodrän, lay drainage pipes and fill up with gravel around it, that is also on top. Then I would lay landscape fabric on the gravel and top with soil.
Unfortunately, I don't have room for it in the basement, and the idea of a "secret" underground room with a hidden entrance is a bit intriguing
It might work well to cast a box with a sloped roof, a waterproof layer (tar?) isodrän board, and gravel, thanks for the suggestion Roary.

How exciting, you must post pictures when it's time to start building!
No matter how well you drain, you are likely to need a dehumidifier, possibly heating or possibly cooling if you are going to have a lot of electronics down there...
That bunker could become a nice SPA, I suppose you can see the sea?
We live on a hill consisting of sandy moraine, which drains itself very well, but additional drainage and some form of ventilation are probably needed. The boiler room is nearby so I could take warm air from there and pump it into the bunker.

Yes, there are some sauna plans.Norlund said:That bunker could become a nice SPA, I assume you can see the sea?

If you cast more than 30 cm, the concrete becomes waterproof without a waterproofing layer.Norlund said:Thinking of building an underground bunker. Entrance from our basement. The greater risk is that you get small cracks that let in water, but these can be injected if necessary.

I can only agree, really exciting. In times of catastrophe or when Hurricane Gudrun's sister comes to visit, you can go down and sit and cozy up while the world ends above.Norlund said:
