As vasa mentions, groove-sawn MDF, plywood or masonite in 3-4mm thickness can also be laminated together, damp renovation plaster and grooved wet room boards also work. It completely depends on where the cubes are to be placed.

A trick to make the MDF board flexible is to make a number of grooves in it at regular intervals. The depth of the groove should be about ¾ of the board's thickness and the distance between the grooves about 12 mm. After such an operation, the board is flexible but not particularly dimensionally stable.
I'll try this.. if it doesn't work out, I'll have to buy a factory-grooved one
