No, unfortunately I'm very doubtful that it will be enough. I say this with the best intentions, the project is awesome and I really don't want to rain on your parade, but I don't think it will work well with those dimensions.
As an enthusiastic sauna-goer, I very much appreciate the anteroom where you change and can cool off a bit. Changing with a fireplace in the middle of the room will be inconvenient and won't be much of a cool-off. If you look at your nice inspiration pictures, you'll see that there are significantly larger spaces around the fireplace.
Isn't it possible to make it bigger? Like to extend an awning to the right as a continuation of the room outside the sauna and have the grill house there. It wouldn't be a grill house as such but a grilling area under a roof, but maybe you could make it work with sailcloth curtains that you can pull over if it's windy. Or is there a way to make the whole building larger? If you could double the size, I think it would be really good. You would place another identical floor plan below the picture above, so you have the sauna at the top left, changing room at the bottom left, and a large common room to the right, which would be the grill house. Even in that case, I think you should have the grill near the right wall and arrange the furniture in a U-shape around it. At the bottom left, you could then have a workbench and some cupboards.
Is there water and electricity?
Edit: quick rough sketch. Apparently, it's incorrectly rotated, but the sauna is at the top right of the picture. Yeah, you probably get it.
I usually physically mark the area in question, with battens or similar, so you can see what space you really get. It usually gives a certain sense of whether it's cramped or not. You can also set up a tarp and build in 3D in a simple way if you want to get a sense of the volume.
My dad's sauna cabin is probably around 15m2, and it's being extended next year... It wasn’t big enough. So don't build too tight is my advice.
Thank you for your good comments. You're absolutely right that one sits too close to the fire - probably need to adjust this. Good also with the "gryta" and arranging intake air from the floor.
Here is the comment from the municipality that granted the "building permit": "You don't need a building permit for the plans you have, but if you are going to install a wood-fired sauna, the sauna heater must be reported to us as a fireplace. But if you have an electric heater, there is no requirement at all. If any part comes closer than 4.5 meters from the neighbor, you must have their consent."
Attached is the picture I applied with[image] Where I wrote sauna and grill hut - however, I didn't explicitly write that I'm going to have an open fireplace in the grill hut. I probably wasn't entirely clear on that when I applied.
The sauna + the open fireplace will make the space HOT! - as several have mentioned. I would go with the picture you applied with, i.e., separate sauna and grill hut with an open space between them. All covered by a common roof. Then you also avoid the sauna humid air in the relaxation section. The open space can be screened with a fixed wall + glass door or glass doors on both sides.
You may be completely right that I want too much. Besides being a hopeless time optimist, I can probably also count myself as a space optimist
When I made the drawing, it felt like there were sufficiently large areas. Still want a space to cook. I've also fantasized about a pizza oven instead of an open fire pit. However, there's something fundamental about sitting around a fire and cooking...
Attaching the basic measurements. It should be enough to come up with something really good, right? [image]
You have 8.7 sqm for the grill cabin, which is about the typical size for smaller factory-made grill cabins, 9 sqm. No problems there.
There's a lot of draft from an open fire, so heat won't be an issue. Also, the advantage is that the sauna dries better, no need for any special supply air. It shouldn't be insulated and sealed, right?
Fireproof bricks are needed only on surfaces directly exposed to the fire. The temperatures don't get particularly high in an open fireplace, especially if it's meant for grilling and not used as a heat source.

Thank you very much for the well-formulated and engaging responses. I will digest this and see where I land. It would definitely be good to have an anteroom to the sauna while still needing it to be large enough with a fireplace. I'm leaning towards extending the shed on the side so I can accommodate an anteroom to the sauna and that it won't be too cramped around the fireplace. The basic construction and the purpose of the build is to make it as simple as possible since, on an annual basis, it won't be used that much. For example, I will have rough sawn timber as the floor and walls, no insulation, and will make benches and furnishings in pine. Some parts I might do in birch, as it's dried now after I made a number of fine planks from the birch that was on the property. I will get back with more pictures when I have a proposal for the extension. When it gets underway in the spring, I'll post more pictures of the actual build
An alternative is to have the grilling area outside, lounge/changing room plus sauna in the house... but that's kind of ruining your idea a bit...
The sauna is located in Jämtland and the basic idea is to have this indoors - especially to keep the mosquitoes away. However, it is cozy to sit under the stars if it weren't for all the gnats..
Mm, got it. I like the idea of a grill cabin. But what if you place it just outside then? I mean accessible from the inside but on the outside. So you have more space inside and pipes and other things on the outside, no smoke inside... etc.

That's definitely something to think about. I'll take this with me, make a drawing, and see how it might look. Thanks!
One thought is not to have a door between the sauna and the grill cabin, but to have the doors forward, with a wooden deck in front. A pergola with mosquito nets solves that problem during mosquito season.
Because as mentioned, the sauna is okay, and the grill cabin is okay. It's the passage directly through the grill cabin that doesn't work. The one who's going from the sauna, past those sitting by the fire to go out and swim/roll in the snow, burns themselves on the grill.
Thank you Anna_H for the great input and thoughts.
I have continued to reflect and my new proposal is as follows:
- I will expand the side of the grill house so it becomes wider.
- Instead of an open fire, I will make a pizza oven. It will provide a cozy fire ambiance and you can cook better, plus it becomes a bit safer if you have a hatch that can be closed.
- The pizza oven will protrude outside the house, but I plan to integrate it somehow.
- I will set up a smaller room for changing and cooling down after the sauna.
- The entrance to the cabin will be to the changing room between the grill house and the sauna. However, it will be a low door - about 160 cm high. A bit like an old-fashioned pastoral cabin.
- I will use lots of old windows to make it bright and nice towards the water and the view in all rooms.
- By having a door to enter the cabin, work in the grill house can be done more efficiently.
These are my thoughts so far and I am thankful for all input and comments.

I have continued pondering and my new suggestion is the following:
- I'll expand the side of the grill cabin to make it wider.
- Instead of an open fire, I’ll make a pizza oven. It will give a nice fireplace feeling and you can cook in a better way, plus it's a bit safer if you have a door that you can close.
- The pizza oven will stick out outside the house, but I’m thinking of enclosing it in some way.
- I'll add a small room for changing and cooling off after the sauna.
- The entrance to the cabin to the changing room will be between the grill cabin and the sauna. However, it will be a low door - about 160 cm high. A bit like an old-fashioned fäbodstuga.
- I’m going to use a bunch of old windows, so it becomes bright and nice facing the water and the view in all rooms.
- By having a door to enter the cabin, you can work more efficiently with the grill cabin.
That's as far as I've gotten in my thoughts, and I'm grateful for all input and comments.
