Hello.

I'm planning to build a shelf/light rack on one side of my living room.

I'm not well-versed in construction and carpentry, so my questions are:

How should I attach this large wooden board to the wall without any visible mounts or screws?
It will be quite large, 3220x53x?, but I don't want any visible brackets either.
What kind of board should I use? I've considered a kitchen countertop made from some solid wood species, which I can mill holes into and install spotlights from the top. It will be quite high, so it's okay if something small protrudes on top. Only light items will be placed on the shelf.

My idea, see picture...

So it should go around the entire wall, from edge to edge.

How to do it?

Thanks for the answers :-)

A relatively simple solution is to screw a 20*20mm strip directly to the wall along both the long side and the short sides. Then, mill out the corresponding dimensions in the middle of the countertop's long side and short sides, leaving 40mm "unmilled" on the short sides from the "front" view. Then you just slide the countertop over the strips and hide them. Pre-drill two vertical holes in the countertop and on the short sides, then tap a wooden dowel into each hole to hold the countertop in place. Leave the top or underside of the countertop intact depending on where the holes for the dowels are most visible.

Depending on how deep the shelf needs to be, there are brackets you attach to the wall on the long side. They look like window frame screws which you attach to the studs and then you need to have drilled the same thickness on the long side of the shelf. These then wedge themselves into the shelf board. There are also brackets like flat iron that you attach behind the long side of the shelf board with round iron protruding. These can also be attached into pre-drilled holes in the long side of the shelf board.

Two very interesting and smart solutions.

Another solution I've considered is building a box using studs and thin chipboard or masonite sheets, and then filling the joints with wood filler. The whole shelf will be painted pitch black in the end, so it doesn't necessarily have to look ugly... I can use narrow studs so the thickness of the "box" remains controlled. What do you think about this?

Sketched an idea that popped into my head,

I cut out a city skyline with high-rise buildings in chipboard and paint it black... and attach it to the outer edge... It would be the same principle as in the post above, just that I hide ugly seams with this. Then I can put LED strips from Clas Olhsson behind it... to emphasize the silhouette feel... and maybe drill tiny holes in the buildings so it looks like windows.

Edit: Discovered that I sketched wrong on the picture. On the right side of the shelf, the wall doesn't extend as far as I drew, but is flush with where the shelf is.
