Hello!

I'm planning to build a similar bed as in the picture for my daughter. But I have a question about how to make the railing stable enough to withstand a 4-year-old. The railing in the picture looks very delicate but I'm wondering if it can be made stable. How would you construct it to make it as stable as possible?

  • Children's loft bed with storage drawers underneath, surrounded by pink curtains, a white railing, a swan decoration, and a round mirror on the wall.
How should it be attached? I believe the railing itself is more than sturdy enough

Rule up in the ceiling, then in the wall.
Bunk bed with drawers beneath, flanked by pink curtains. A swan decorates the wall, and a pendant lamp hangs above. Blue lines indicate a rail installation.

That's the question 🙂

Suitable dimensions for the railing, any suggestions?

Moelven has planed pine 27x27mm, that should be sufficient.

Handrail in the same dimension or a wider one?

In the picture, it seems to be the same dimension?

Of course, it's possible to have the overhang in 33x33mm if desired.

A 4-year-old? Then you'll need a fence that's at least 1 meter high; they climb over easily. I think you should forget about the fence and lower the bed so it's about 20 cm above the floor. With a fence like the one shown in the picture, the fall height would be nearly 1 meter which isn't good. What's shown is suitable for at most a half-year-old, then it's elevated with various things under the mattress to easily reach the child. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your idea (and the picture), and it's lower on the bed you have, but kids can climb.

I had a bunk bed when I was 5-6 years old. I have no memory of falling off at any time.

Accidents can certainly happen, but she's not the type to climb. But I understand your point.

Yes, exactly, but I was thinking if it could be better, the one in the picture was more for inspiration.

Better as in more sleek, powerful, or stylish?

Function is the most important, that the child does not roll out.
Then of course it would be nice if it were more stylish :)

Is the room so small that the bed has to be placed on something else to fit?
