I plan to build a step to the outer door. I was thinking of doing it with leftover slabs from the driveway (see image). I was then thinking of laying a "frame" with paving stones to cover the edges.
My idea is to glue the paving stone with something like PU 700 or similar, and then mortar the paving stone around.
Does this sound like a good idea? Should I do it differently?
What kind of mortar should I use?
I built a platform for a friend a few years ago, placed larger blocks 20x20x50cm as a frame, these were placed inside the bottom tiles so they wouldn't be pushed outwards, filled it with base course and stone dust, packed in the tiles before the larger edge stones, no glue, no mortar. Turned out great and it's still there, was there this summer and it's at least 5 years since we built the platform, it's about 1.5m wide and 0.8m deep.
if it should stick up 10 cm, they should be 15 since the tiles you have are 5cm.
if you can't find 15 cm either, remove tiles, dig a little so the new ones don't stick up higher than 10 cm above the surface.
gluing might last a few years but is doubtful, especially if you're going to glue exactly as it looks in the picture, smooth stones don't adhere well. but if you want to try, stone glue PU700 is an option or masonry and plaster mortar B, though I don't think it will last more than a year.
He probably thinks that you should remove the tiles underneath. I would probably also remove the six tiles and do something in that hole. The fact that it skews slightly towards the door bothers me less than a completely centered elevation that is shifted five to ten cm against the other tiles.
Of course, I mean you have to remove the tiles that are there.
Then I would have made it a little bigger so that there isn't a small piece of 5 cm on the right side, make the surface 20 cm wider for a more symmetrical look.
