Hello!
We are in the consideration/planning stage for our deck. Today, we have a deck that is basically a concrete block about 60-70 cm high, 3.5m deep, and 4m wide with a roof and railings around it except towards the house where, of course, there is the house wall and the entrance/exit from the house.
As we will need to tear down the deck and renovate the facade on that side (both are quite fragile), I am naturally considering how best to create a new deck. The current version works, but I would like to have a wooden deck on top of the concrete as it would be more comfortable to walk on.
This, of course, raises a couple of questions:
1: Can the joists be placed directly on the concrete? It is, after all, apart from the side toward the house, a freestanding concrete block that itself lifts the joists off the ground.
2: Can the deck be extended somewhat so that the joists slightly overhang the edge of the concrete block without having to set support posts and such? It's not much I want to extend it, maybe half a meter in depth and a maximum of half a meter on one short side. On the other side, there is a staircase cast in the concrete, and that side aligns with the house side there.

Question 1, Yes, just make sure it's straight, then it might be a good idea to attach the joists to the concrete as well.

Question 2, Yes, but of course it depends on what dimension of joists you will use. 45*120 and up can handle a half-meter overhang.

Ok, and then I assume that it's 120 in height for the studs that are needed, hmm.. I don't have room for more than a maximum of 60-80mm high studs (I estimate without having measured), then I'm up at the threshold of the patio door. Then I'll probably have to skip the "extension" and just place like 45 studs to have something to fasten the decking to...

Yes, it's on the height, measure it so maybe you won't be disappointed. You don't need to skip the expansion. You can place a plintrad outside the slab where you extend the joists with thicker studs.

I feel a paint sketch is in order to be able to understand.
