"Broken" staircase

Hello!

After a lot of hard work and swearing, we've finally removed all the old linoleum from our stairs, but the question is, what do we do now? On several of the steps, a part of the wood came off when we ripped off the linoleum, so the steps are far from even. We need to even out the surface of the entire steps, not just small holes—will wood filler still work? I've only bought wood filler in a tube before, and it would take about a million of those tubes to fix the stairs. Any other suggestions?

We weren't planning on having wooden stair treads (we're planning to put some type of carpet or covering on them), has anyone seen something nice for this? We'd prefer our stairs not to look like they're straight out of the '70s ;-)

Why not wood? There are nice step kits to buy or you can lay laminate flooring on the steps (though it requires more puzzling). Carpet is more 70s, isn't it?

We already have a lot of wooden details in the house and have decided that a carpet will be "just neutrally enough." Non-slip, quiet, and a little warmer to walk on.

Saw a very beautiful picture somewhere where a couple had painted the stairs white and then placed a thin black carpet on the steps. Very stylish, I thought, unfortunately I have no idea where I saw the picture, so that doesn't help you, unfortunately.

There is wood filler available in buckets. Pallmann has that, among others. If the staircase is relatively solid, then regular construction filler would probably work.
