In advance, I apologize for a seemingly dumb question.

We recently bought a house (built in '47) and are in many ways in the process of renovating.

In the absence of other things to do, I started tearing down a wall in the basement that is not supposed to remain (not load-bearing as it doesn't exist in any of the other houses on the street that are similar/built at the same time).

After I got a bit further, I noticed that one of the "channels" was black. What could this be due to? Is it something to be worried about?

It's just from the surge.

As I said, probably a dumb question.
I'd rather ask than be ignorant :)

Thank you.
