Earlier this fall, we purchased various studs and boards to use in the attic to reinforce rafters and install flooring. The timber was nicely covered under a tarp until it blew off on one or two occasions. The timber got wet and then ended up under the tarp again. When I pulled out the timber this weekend, I noticed that some black mold had formed on the studs and boards.

Can the timber still be used anyway, or should it just be discarded?

If you set up timber with black mold inside the house, is there a risk that the mold will spread to other nearby timber?

No worries if it has dried up again. It will, however, look "a bit moldy." Apply some Boracol if you're still concerned.

Take, for example, råspont used for roofing. It molds right away whether one wants it or not because there is a lot of residual moisture left from production. Once the air has reached and dried the wood, there will be no more mold. Just paint over it.

Okay, good to know. Then just let it dry out and then put up the boards.

Exactly. But new moisture on them triggers the black mold again.

The underside of my roof paneling molded a little outdoors 2 weeks after installation. Even then, it hadn't been exposed to moisture at any point. As I understand it, the raw paneling is quickly produced and not dried out. The black mold thrives in the residual moisture.

Three years later (and still unpainted), the amount of black mold remains the same as when it was installed.
