I haven't done the calculations myself and try to adhere to some kind of established building practice. So if grooves are the standard, I guess I'll have to adhere to that. I don't know if I can calculate such things myself. Is there an online template one can use?

Just make sure to get the net down properly so you don't have visible marks in the concrete that can be seen from above and ensure you have a stable and well-packed substrate.
