Hello!

I’m going to cut a hole in the facade, about 1600mm wide. I’ve determined that a laminated beam with dimensions 90x180mm will suit me well. I used Moelven's program.

Now for the questions:

1/ Is it a good idea to join together two 45x195 studs to use as a horizontal beam?

2/ What does support length mean?

3/ "Column calculation: 10.4kn min 41mm". What does it mean?

4/ I think pillars of 90x90 should be sufficient. A double 45x95 can easily handle 10kn according to the Wood Guide vertically. They will also be bolted to the rest of the house. http://www.traguiden.se/konstruktio...dimensionerande-barformaga/?previousState=100

Eternally grateful for an answer if this is something that holds :)

1) The joists should preferably be glued and screwed. This significantly increases the load-bearing capacity and equates to a 45x245 joist. The bearing capacity of such a beam is highly dependent on the structural timber's grade, yet still struggles to match a 90x180 laminated beam.
2) The support length is the depth of the pillars or joist ends that a beam rests on. If you have two joined 45x95 joists whose ends the beam rests on, the support length is 90 mm.
3) I don't understand what my 41 mm stands for.
4) 90x90, whether it is structural timber or laminated wood, handles large vertical loads. I find it hard to understand that it would be relevant in this case.

I would find it easier to comment on your calculations if I knew a bit more about the conditions.

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

I'm not quite sure what conditions you mean. The house was built in '49 with vertical planks and horizontal plank sheathing on each side of it. We have just made an extension and are now going to open up to it.

The hole will be about 1600 mm wide and whatever height is required to recess the beam. I am satisfied with your response and will order an LT beam, I will screw and glue the posts together. As an amateur, I like to err on the side of caution. :)

The information that it is a plank wall explains a lot. Good luck!
