Hello!

I have a rotted frame for a basement door that needs to be replaced. It's not a "real" door frame, just a frame made of wooden studs attached directly to the foundation wall - unclear exactly how. I haven't torn anything down yet. The door leaf is quite okay, so I was just thinking of fitting a new frame so the door can survive a few more years.

Is there any reason not to use pressure-treated wood for the frame? And if you don't use it, what's the best way to moisture-protect it? Oil/paint?

A good reason not to use treated wood is that it risks smelling bad if it gets damp + it's tricky to paint on.

If the frame becomes so wet that it rots, you should promptly address the root of the problem and mount the frame so that it only has contact with the basement wall via the frame fastenings. Place roofing felt under the frame/threshhold so those parts will also be protected.
