Hello,
I'm renovating a guest room with a chimney and a freestanding stove.
My plan is to lay slate tiles as a spark guard under the stove.
I plan to put plastic on the chipboard, frame it with L-profile steel, pour coarse concrete, and lay the slate tiles in the wet concrete.
Are there any concerns with my plan? Will the slate tiles stay in place?
The area is about 1 square meter and the height of the casting is 25 mm; I'm thinking I don't need to reinforce it?

Grateful for opinions

I would not have used coarse concrete, choose fine concrete instead. It will be easier to adjust since fine concrete contains smaller stone sizes compared to coarse concrete. There is a risk that the stone size of coarse concrete will make it more difficult to adjust the height as easily as with concrete containing smaller stone sizes. You should also try to incorporate some type of reinforcement in your "concrete cake" so that it doesn't crack and your slate stones come loose.
