Who can explain to me the difference between bjällke and balk?

Have tried. But thinking slowly.
Why is it called glulam BEAM? And not joist?
It's solid wood!

A beam can be any material, including wood.

Saying "bjälke" when it is wood is therefore to define more clearly. Laminated wood beam already contains that information, and thus it adds nothing to instead say "limträbjälke," which is of course also correct.

This is how Träguiden uses the terms and thus likely a large part of the wood industry, but there may well be other definitions and uses of the words in more specialized industries that are not consistent with these definitions.
